"Love Story" by Alex LeGrys
Love Story
He has her bent over a bathroom vanity —
by the morning her bottle-blonde hair
will have clogged the sink and he’ll
have lost another day of work
her doll-like hands clamp on
to his collar bones as she whispers
the lines many of us have on file
for the next poor rehearsal
an overdue valentine sporting
their initials hangs above the bed,
photographs of the scrawny lovers
line the mirrors, and the calico kitten
scurries under a swivel chair as one joker
pushes the other against the unlocked door
their theater’s filthy, but the tickets
sold well, so she pulls on his collar, calling
him names unfit for a hound, and asks:
Which lipstick should I wear tonight?
