"First Thing" by John Grey

First Thing

The day is waiting
for people to live in it.
It’s like a theater
with rows of empty seats.
Or a vacant house
with chairs, couches, beds,
unoccupied.

The day is
the kind of silence
that encourages talkers.
It’s air
anxious to be breathed.

The day is a mirror
whose glass
can’t reflect
until a face gets here.
